Main Ingredients + Tools Needed

This recipe takes just a few ingredients and will make two martinis. Here is everything you will need to get started.

Ingredients

  • espresso- fresh brewed, and cooled.
  • vodka- the base of this martini is made with 4 oz of regular vodka. Any brand works, and unflavored is best!
  • peppermint liqueur– liqueur with the base of peppermint lends a great flavor to this co*cktail.
  • simple syrup– I have a great simple syrup recipe found here.
  • ice cubes- can’t have a drink without ice!
  • crushed peppermint candiesfor garnish. I like this bag of crushed peppermint candies because it’s ready to go. If you want to use candy canes and crush them in a resealable bag with a mallet, that works great too!
  • 3coffee beansfor garnish
  • fresh mint leavesoptional, for garnish

Tools

Homemade Simple Syrup

I make this simple syrup in big batches to keep in the refrigerator but for this recipe you can do equal parts of sugar and water (about 1/4 cup of each) and you’ll have plenty. This co*cktail doesn’t call for much simple syrup, so you can toss the extra or store in an airtight container the fridge for a future drink. If you want more in depth detail about making a simple syrup, browse through my posthere. If you don’t want to make your own, you can use a simple syrup found at the grocery store. It’s usually on the same aisle as honey, agave and other sweeteners. I’ve also found it in the coffee or alcohol aisles.

FAQ About Peppermint Espresso Martini

What is peppermint liqueur?

It is a liqueur made with a peppermint extract base that can be added to many co*cktails for a little peppermint flavor. It’s similar to coffee liqueur (like Kahlua or Tia Maria).

What can I use instead of vodka?

Traditionally vodka or tequila is used in espresso martinis but you can use your liquor of choice. Irish Whiskey (like Bailey’s Irish Cream), rum or gin are good alternatives.

What do I need to do to get my espresso martini more frothy?

The key to a frothy martini is making sure your co*cktail shaker is very cold. You’ll know it’s cold enough if it hurts your fingers while shaking it. Also make sure you’re vigorously shaking the co*cktail shaker to get a nice foamy top.

Can I use normal coffee in an espresso martini?

Yes, you can. You can make an espresso martini without an espresso maker by using cold brew or drip coffee. Cold brew coffee has a strong coffee concentrate that can be a substitute for espresso. If you’re looking for a milder flavor try using brewed coffee.
